9 Square Press specializes in haikai anthologies and scholarship.
The name of the press comes from an in-joke. I was trying to work out a quilt pattern and didn’t understand why I couldn't render the design accurately. I went to my husband for advice, and he noted that what I envisioned couldn't be rendered in the two-dimensional plane of a quilt. When I was determined to figure it out anyway, he joked that this was "a real 9-square problem." We eventually managed to come up with a version of the quilt which worked for me, and the concept of "9 Square" became a running joke in our relationship . . . because I keep coming up with challenging and odd ideas.
Now, 9 Square Press represents a DIY spirit, a lighthearted approach to poetry, and a commitment to the haikai community.
